Things to do in Turkey

What to experience

Hagia Sophia's Byzantine mosaics, the Grand Bazaar's 4,000 shops, hot air balloons over Cappadocia's fairy chimneys, and Turkish baths. Turkey bridges two continents beautifully.

Insider tip

Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque are free. Topkapi Palace costs €18 and takes 3+ hours. The Grand Bazaar is overwhelming but worth an hour — get there at 9am before tour groups. Spice Bazaar is smaller and more manageable.

Turkey bridges East and West in ways that go beyond geography — the cuisine, architecture, and culture synthesise Byzantine, Ottoman, and modern influences. The countryside rewards slow travel: the Turquoise Coast (Bodrum, Fethiye, Kaş), Cappadocia's underground cities, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus and Troy are world-class destinations.

🕌Istanbul Old CityHagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace — all doable in two days. Book timed entry in advance.
🎈Cappadocia balloonSunrise balloon rides over fairy chimneys are bucket-list. Book 2-3 months ahead in peak season (April–October).

Airport transfers & transport

Istanbul's new airport (IST) is 45km from the city — one of the furthest in Europe. The Havaist bus is cheapest at ~€8. Buy an Istanbulkart smart card for all transport including the iconic Galata Bridge tram.

Pro tip

The Istanbulkart (€2.50 deposit) works on all ferries, trams, metro and buses. Cross the Bosphorus by public ferry (€0.80) instead of bridge taxi for an essential Istanbul experience.

April–May and September–October are ideal — pleasant temperatures, manageable crowds, and lower prices than peak summer. Istanbul is worth visiting year-round.

Istanbul is generally safe for tourists in the main visitor areas. Standard urban travel precautions apply. The city's transport network is reliable and easy to use.
